Legalization of existing buildings

The process of legalization of existing buildings aims at the restoration of urban legality and is provided for in the current Legal Regime of Urbanization and Construction, according to Art. 102 and following.

To legalize an existing building it is first necessary to verify its compliance with the legislation and regulations in force, for later and in the same way as a permit application, to instruct the legalization process in the respective city council. In the same way in the event of the destruction, in whole or in part, of an existing building, it should be legalised. If the building does not comply with the established urban parameters, it may be necessary to promote a change to the construction. It can also be given the case that the request for legalization can be used to promote an expansion of the same construction.
