Legalisation of existing buildings
The process of legalisation aims to provide urban legality to existing buildings. This is achievable according to Art. 102 and subsequent of the currect Legal Regulation of Urbanisation and Construction (RJUE).
The first step in the process is to verify the building compliance with the legislation and regulations in place, and then submit a planning application in the respective city council. A partial or full demolition of an existing building should also be legalised. If the building does not comply with the required urban parameters, it may be necessary to make changes to the existing construction. In some cases, regulations allowing, the request for legalisation can also be used as an opportunity to apply for a building extension.
